My single leg wheel pose is getting better and better each week. I can put my heel down too but I liked this pic better.
Are you truly free to move the way you want to move or do you constantly struggle with stubborn fat, fatigue, aches, pains, poor recovery, or injuries?
Getting the results you want from your training means choosing the most functional exercises for your goals. As Charles Poliquin says "You don't need to power clean 250 lb. to play competitive table tennis".
Translation: Having the thoracic mobility to be able to press up into single leg wheel (pictured above) is much more useful to me than being able to squat double my bodyweight or swing a 35 lb. kettlebell.
Being able to get into the same yoga pose you see Dashama doing in the video below means having the core stability and endurance to perform an inverted pike on a single point trapeze that's moving fast without falling and cracking my head open.
Back when I started personal training I used to brag about being able to leg press 350 lb. (wish I had a picture but you'll have to take my word for it) or deadlift 135 lb. or press 35 lb. dumbbells or do pullups with little to no assist but I couldn't run up a hill to save my life and my core was so weak I couldn't stabilize a wall assisted inversion either. I trained really hard but it was only to look good and at the expense of my posture, health, and ability to participate in activities that I enjoyed. Much has changed since then.
Remember that the whole point of training especially Functional Training is to live in a healthy body that's free to move in ways that are useful and appealing to you. This doesn't mean you should stick to little pink weights it means you need the right exercises in the right amounts at the right intensity.
