The Jay Robb Corporation prides itself on producing the best protein powders on the market. That is high praise to heap on yourself as a company and we couldn’t help but investigate to determine just how good (or not) Jay Robb Whey Protein in fact is. Available in various flavors and sizes, there is no shortage of variety in their whey protein powder lineup.
So, let’s find out where the confidence behind the claims of superiority from this company comes from, and whether it is justified.
Introduction and Ingredients
There is nothing fancy about the Jay Robb Whey Protein powders. The formulation is simple and straightforward. The typical serving size is 30g, which delivers a 25g protein payload made up of cold-processed, cross-flow microfiltered whey protein isolate. That’s pretty much the best quality isolate that money can buy, and the 83% protein content per serving is good value for money.
You also get a small amount of the macrominerals sodium, potassium and calcium. The powder contains no cholesterol and only 1g of carbohydrates. You get 18 amino acids, including the BCAAs isoleucine, leucine and valine.
Stevia is used as a natural sweetener, meaning this product contains no aspartame or other nasty artificial sweeteners. It also contains no sugar, MSG, casein or gluten. There’s no unnecessary carbohydrate padding going on either.
Finally, Jay Robb only sources dairy for the protein production from cows that have not been treated with the synthetic growth hormone rBGH. There is unfortunately an asterisk attached to this which we will discuss lower down in the review. On the face of it, this is a lean, healthy whey protein supplement.
Mixing and Drinking
The powder mixes very easily in both milk and water. As always you get best results with a shaker or blender, but the teaspoon method will work fine as well. As far as whey powders go, this is about as tasty as you can hope for with a pleasant, light texture. It is on the sweet side though, and I’m not sure why protein powder companies insist on making these things so sweet. The stevia sweetener leaves a slight aftertaste, but nothing as nasty as the bitter echo of artificial sweeteners like aspartame or sucralose.
There are plenty of flavors to choose from, but personally we’re not big on messing around with flavors. Hit the trusty old vanilla (which you can blend with just about anything), chocolate or strawberry and focus on reaping the benefits these powders produce.
We researched user opinions on this product, and a good 9 out of 10 people favorably review the Jay Robb whey protein powders. Here are excerpts from a few verified buyer comments:
“I love Jay Robb Whey Protein powder. I have tried several other brands and they were chalky or unpleasant in some other way. Jay Robb Whey Protein is easy to mix, tastes good and is easy to drink, whether mixed with something in a blender or alone.” B. Dalton, Amazon.com
“I’m into fitness and nutrition, I don’t eat meat, so I use this powder as a protein supplement to help fuel my workouts. I have been using the Jay Robb chocolate protein powder for years now. Definitely the BEST I’ve found, and without all the artificial ingredients that the other powders have.” Elise Cook, Amazon.com
“This is one of the best protein powders out there. It doesn’t contain any of the artificial chemicals found in other powders and it tastes great (I use the vanilla). It’s especially good in smoothies, but I even put it in my oatmeal in the morning. I’ve read some reviews complaining that it’s too expensive, but it’s comparable to other powders and it’s an incredibly fair price for the quality that you’re getting. If you find a protein powder that’s a lot cheaper, you should worry about what you’re ingesting.” J. Hesse, Amazon.com
Despite the fact that the product is advertised as rGBH-free, there is a disclaimer that states that Jay Robb may use regular dairy products if they cannot source enough of the grass-fed, “clean” dairy. So, you may not be getting entirely clean powder in every container.
Where to Buy
Amazon.com stocks a wide range of Jay Robb protein powders, and will ship them to you fast, reliably and free (if your order totals more than $25).
Jay Robb Whey Protein is undoubtedly one of the leaner, purer and healthier whey options on the market. There’s none of the junk and artificial sweeteners that fill out cheaper products and even sensitive stomachs should be able to keep this down without any ill effects.
It’s a pity that they cannot guarantee the product to be rGBH-free every time and in our opinion should probably not be advertising it as such. This is also a fairly expensive product and while it contains the highest quality whey isolate it may not be worth the extra investment for everyone. If purity and health is important to you though, Jay Robb Whey Protein should be high on your list of options.
