Lose last 10 pounds

by Anna
(Toronto, ON, Canada)

I'm a 43 year old mother of three boys. I have lost 50 pounds (over a two year period) and have kept it off for the past year. I have been struggling for a year to lose the last 10. I am 5'6 and weight 150 pounds. Most of my weight is in my upper body. I would appreciate any tips you have to offer. I workout 5 times a week, 5 days of cardio and 2 days of strength training.

get uncomfortable & lose weight

Hi Anna

First of all congratulations on your loss of 50 lb. That is a lot to accomplish especially when you're a busy mom of 3 boys.

I totally understand what it's like to struggle with the last 10 pounds and I see this happen to many of my clients too.

Experts call it a plateau but I like to call it getting comfortable. Our bodies and our brains don't like change so when your body reaches a weight that seems acceptable, your brain and your body work to keep you there.

In order to lose the last 10 pounds you have to embrace change and really step outside your comfort zone. I'm talking really step out of your comfort zone and try new workouts, new exercises, new types of cardio. Get crazy with your workouts and do what you've never done before no matter how different it may seem.

Your body is so used to the same old 5 days of cardio and 2 days of weights so switching things around a lot is totally necessary to get your body to respond.

Try 4 days of full body circuit workouts (there's tons of free workouts like this on the site), 2 days of interval cardio outdoors instead of dvd's, and maybe 1 day of Yoga For Weight Loss .

Your body will have to work so hard to adapt to all the new things you're doing and the pounds will just start to come off especially if you're changing things up every two weeks.

This should be enough of a change to see the scale move within a week. If not then you know you need something more intense. After about 2 weeks with new workouts switch things up again. Try 3-4 bootcamp workouts per week plus 2-3 days of Plyo Interval Cardio and keep doing some type of yoga too.

Yoga is amazing for weightloss and fatloss because it creates internal balance and boosts your body's fat burning systems. Read more about it in my article: downward dog for increased fatloss.

Keep me posted and if anyone else has suggestions please feel free to chime in!
