Need weight loss workouts that work

by Kourtney
(Hendersonville, TN, United States)

Well, I am 16 years old, 5'5" and run cross-country and track, yet I still am 140 pounds and have 26% body fat. I think the problem is that I only run and don't do any strength training, but I don't know where to begin. The thing is there is so much information out there and I don't want to waste my time on some routine that's not even going to work since I'm short on time anyways. If you could help me, it would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you,
Kourtney

weight loss and fatloss workouts

Hi Kourtney

Thanks so much for posting your question. I think it's awesome that you're a cross country runner and I can see how that would limit your time and make you feel somewhat skeptical about all the workout programs out there making crazy claims.

You are right, there is an overload of information out there but in reality losing weight is very simple and requires 3 basic things:

1. A slight calorie deficit, in other words whatever you are eating now is enough to maintain your weight so if you could create a small deficit of 10% that would make a huge difference. Cut out anything that is not essential for your health i.e. sports drinks, soft drinks, highly processed carbs including power bars. Eliminate all junk food, fast food, and frozen or packaged foods. What are you left with? A clean diet that will boost metabolism like you wouldn't believe. Here's a list of lean body foods to get you started. The great thing about eating this way is it will make you a better runner.

2. Metabolic conditioning is THE #1 way to train for both weight loss and fatloss and best of all it only takes 20 min. I'm doing a huge write up on this next month but you can get started with my Total Body Weight Loss Workout (full instructions at link). Use any equipment you have i.e. dumbbells instead of sandbells

Do this type of workout 3-4 times a week and make sure your weight loss workouts only include the best fat burning exercises.

3. High intensity interval training with timed intervals that change every month. Since you already run this will be easy for you just add to your cross country runs. Check out the High Intensity Interval Training Workout Plan for ideas on how to get started. You can totally customize this to your needs.

Hope all this helps and be sure to keep us posted. If you need motivation and tips on how to use all the fatloss and weightloss workouts here on the site be sure to subscribe to our newsletter (box at right).
