Today we are going to review one of the cheaper options on the market, the Body Fortress Super Advanced Whey Protein Powder, specifically the 2 lbs canister. This gives you 24 servings at 26g of protein per serving, or 12 servings at 52g of protein each. The tub will set you back around $15.
So, at just over a dollar per serving if you go for the 52g option, this is not a bad deal. There’s a good amount of protein per serving and plenty of additional muscle fuel added to the mix. Let’s evaluate this product and hear what other users have to say to determine if it’s worth your time and money.
Introduction and Ingredients
The ingredients of this product will vary slightly depending on the flavor you choose, so we’re going to stick to only the essentials. The product contains a whey protein blend of both whey protein concentrate and isolate.
In addition to this Body Fortress has stacked what they call a “Super Recovery Blend”, consisting of creatine, taurine, l-glutamine, leucine, isoleucine and valine. That’s a very nice blend of proteins and amino acids that will help your muscles both grow and recover from strenuous exercise. In total the product contains 18 essential and nonessential amino acids.
For added nutrition you also get small amounts of the macrominerals calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, sodium and potassium.
The product is artificially sweetened with acesulfame potassium and sucralose, and is gluten free. The carbohydrate content is 7g per serving.
Mixing and Drinking
The powder mixes fairly easily with fluids, but we highly recommend using a shaker or blender. If you prefer to stir with a spoon you’ll need to dissolve small amounts of powder at a time.
Opinion on the taste will vary from person to person. Most agree that it’s not a bad tasting whey powder, while some users even label it the best tasting whey they’ve had. Again, this is all subjective.
Suffice it to say that while you probably won’t drink it purely for the taste, it won’t make you gag either. It is very sweet though and if you’re sensitive to sweetness it may be hard to get down, especially the cookies ‘n cream flavor.
The product is artificially sweetened so obviously it will have a slightly unpleasant aftertaste. The available flavors are chocolate, strawberry, vanilla, cookies ‘n cream and chocolate peanut butter. The strawberry flavor seems to be the least popular, with chocolate and vanilla being the most popular flavors.
So, can this cheap whey protein powder produce any significant results? We went hunting for user experiences from verified purchasers of the product to see what sort of results you can expect from the Body Fortress Super Advanced Whey Protein Powder. Here are a few excerpts:
“I’ve been using this brand for about 6 years now and it hasn’t let me down. With just a simple diet and exercise regimen (including very little weight lifting), I was able to stack on 30+ lbs of solid muscle in 5 months without any appreciable fat gain – in fact, I seemed to have even LESS body fat. I highly recommend this product – it’s my protein of choice and it’s actually affordable.” T. Le, Amazon.com
“I’m not too sure about gains over other protein shakes, but I have been seeing some good results, I was 195lbs of lard 4 months ago..now I’m 165lbs and have gained muscle mass overall, granted I work out 5 times a week. I also add a bit of pure glutamine powder for recovery, which doesn’t affect the taste either way.” Johnny B, Amazon.com
Now that we’ve seen some of the results people have achieved with this whey protein powder, here are some reviews from more verified purchasers regarding their experience with the product in general:
“Compared to other protein powders, Body Fortress is one of the best deals, if not the very best deal around for sure. The nutritional stats on it are in line with most others, and along with some exercise and eating more balanced dinners I have begun losing weight and am feeling great. I highly recommend Body Fortress in any flavor for its nutrition, ease of use and flavor, and great price. You can get better, more nutritious or flavorful protein powders for sure, but not at this price in my opinion…” John Thomas, Amazon.com
“This is a very good whey protein powder. Not only does it contain 100% whey protein, it also contains other supplements which can further enhance results such as creatine, taurine, glutamine, leucine, isoleucine, valine. This product has been regularly advertised in magazines such as Muscle and Fitness for many years.” J. Garay, Amazon.com
One of the negatives about the Body Fortress range of whey protein supplements is that they are very sweet. It is also not a nice kind of sweetness; it is the artificial sweetener kind of sweetness. This is the main factor that makes the taste intolerable for some people.
Where to Buy
Most of the time you can get the best price online at Amazon.com. They also offer a dual tub package deal with free shipping.
Obviously, you get what you pay for. This is a budget whey protein powder. For the price it is quite good. You get a decent amount of whey protein, stacked with BCAAs as well as a creatine boost.
While the taste and excessive sweetness may not appeal to everyone, you can’t really complain too much at this price point. We recommend at first to give one of the more popular flavors (chocolate, vanilla) a try to help you decide.
- It works
- Added creatine & l-glutamine
- Lots of macrominerals
- Artificial sweeteners
- Too sweet
