Six Star Whey Protein Plus is a low priced protein powder supplement that will appeal to anyone who wants the benefits of whey protein at a budget price. This particular product is aimed more at muscle builders than the lean muscle weight loss crowd and has been boosted with creatine and BCAAs.
It sounds like a good product on paper, so let’s take a closer look. We’ll discuss the ingredients, mixing and taste and as well as the results and opinons of other users to form a complete picture of the value Six Star Whey Protein Plus has to offer.
Ingredients Breakdown
The latest formulation of this product delivers an ultra premium whey blend (containing both whey concentrate and whey isolate). In addition to that you get a recovery and performance blend consisting of creatine monohydrate, taurine, l-lysine HCI, l-isoleucine, l-valine and l-glutamine. This is a nice added booster for muscle recovery and development.
Scanning further down the label we see a digestive enzyme blend consisting of papain and amylase. These enzymes help with the breakdown and digestion of protein and carbohydrates respectively.
In a 42g scoop you get 30g of protein, so that’s about 70% protein content per scoop. More expensive brands will give you upwards of 80%, but this is not bad for what you’re paying here. The powder also contains the macrominerals calcium and sodium. There’s 40mg of cholesterol as well, which is less than some other budget brands.
Finally, the artificial sweeteners used are acesulfame potassium and sucralose, which doesn’t exactly fill us with joy but seems to be the norm for protein powders in this price range.
Finally, you get a total of 8g of carbohydrates and 160 calories per serving.
Mixing and Drinking
The powder doesn’t mix all that well. If you use a shaker or hand blender you should have very little undissolved residue to deal with. Avoid mixing with just a spoon though; you’ll have a fight on your hands. One user recommendation we’ve found helpful is to pre-mix the powder a few hours before you drink it.
The taste experience will vary between people. This shake has a thick texture and is not unpleasant to drink at all. Again, people’s opinions vary between “worst taste ever” and “tastes like ice cream!”, so you’ll have to make your own mind up. Ultimately it’s not about taste, but results. The worst about the taste is the distinctive artificial sweetener aftertaste.
Reviews from Other Buyers
It’s time to see what some other verified purchasers of the product think, and whether they’re getting results from using it.
“This is the 2nd protein powder I’ve had (the 1st was Twin Lab’s) and this 1 really stands as strong competition. After 2 weeks my muscles feel different and I feel different – stronger and leaner. I strongly recommend this product to anyone looking for a great-tasting protein powder that delivers results.” KDOT, Amazon.com
“I have NO IDEA how these people are nagging on this product. It tastes great. It blends easy. And I’m meeting all of my macros thanks to this product. Honestly, I’m planning on making this my whey protein for life as long as I’m lifting, really worth it’s price.” Slateski, Amazon.com
“I’ve used a lot of protein powders, so I’ve tasted my fair share of nastiness. However I was pleasantly surprised with this purchase. I decided to give it a try simply because the price is very reasonable and other protein powders seem to be getting more and more expensive. I would give the taste a B+. It was easy to mix and didn’t mess up my stomach. I think I’ll stick with this for a while due to the price and availability at local stores, as well as online.” M. Lawrence, Amazon.com
Cautions
This is a budget powder, so obviously you’ll expect some padding and undesirable contents. We don’t like the artificial sweeteners, but you’re not going to get away from them in this price range. Your choices are limited to either sucking it up or buying more expensive powders.
The product has a 40mg cholesterol content, which should only be a concern if you already struggle with naturally high cholesterol levels and it is lower than most budget powders.
